What is Atom Specification Language (ASL) and why should I use it?

Atom Specification Language (ASL) is a collection of Maestro-specific commands that can be used to define sets of atoms in complex macromolecular systems. Specified atom groups can then be manipulated as desired. While most operations can be performed by interacting only with the GUI, atom specification using ASL may sometimes prove faster and easier, particularly for large structures.

The Atom Selection dialog box allows you to build complicated ASL expressions by selecting items from menus, without the need to understand ASL. This dialog box is displayed when you click the Select button in any panel that has it.
