Why does a Desmond metadynamics simulation slow down as the simulation progresses?

The slowdown occurs because of the accumulation of Gaussian functions that need to be summed to produce the result. The slowdown is more noticeable on small systems where the accumulation of Gaussians is a larger fraction of the computational cost.
