My jobs fail and I see "Host key verification failed" errors. What does this mean?

The "Host key verification failed" error comes from SSH, and indicates that the remote host is unknown to the local host. This prevents SSH from making the connection necessary to launch the remote job.

To fix this, edit the file $HOME/.ssh/config and add the following line:

StrictHostKeyChecking no

This should be done on every host from which jobs are launched, including compute nodes of a cluster. If $HOME is cross-mounted via NFS on all such hosts, the editing only needs to be done once.
