Schrödinger Establishes Subsidiary in Japan

NEW YORK, NY (June 13, 2011) – Schrödinger announced today that it has established a subsidiary, Schrödinger K.K. (シュレーディンガー株式会社), in Tokyo, Japan. “After careful evaluation of our business goals, we came to the conclusion that, in order to have a closer relationship with our Japanese users, we must establish a direct presence in Japan,” says Schrödinger’s President, Dr. Ramy Farid. Schrödinger K.K. will become the sole source of sales and support for all Schrödinger software products in Japan starting October 1, 2011.

The establishment of Schrödinger K.K. brings with it a conclusion to the long-term distribution arrangement between Schrödinger and Infocom Corporation. “When we first looked for help to distribute our product Jaguar in Japan, we signed on with Infocom,” recalls Professor Richard Friesner, Schrödinger’s Co-Founder and Scientific Advisory Board Chairman. “They have been a terrific business partner, and we could not have developed our user base to where it is today without their consistently professional and top-rate service,” concludes Dr. Friesner. Dr. Farid shares this viewpoint, but adds, “Our product line has grown significantly in the last sixteen years, and the time has come when it’s unrealistic to expect any distributor, however good they are, to be able to master the level of complexity inherent in the underlying science.” Dr. Murco Ringnalda, Schrödinger’s Chief Operating Officer, adds, “It’s always sad when business objectives require one to end a successful relationship, particularly such a long and mutually-beneficial one as we’ve enjoyed with our friends at Infocom. However, it is paramount to us to work more closely with our Japanese users to better understand their specific needs and to be able to provide more direct service and support to them.”

Schrödinger and Infocom have reached an agreement under which Infocom will continue to provide sales and support for Schrödinger software products exclusively until September 30, 2011. Until then the two companies will work collaboratively to ensure a smooth transition for all users in Japan. “We are truly grateful to Infocom Corporation for all their help throughout the years,” says Dr. Farid.
