Abstract: 
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the USA, with approximately 5 million people treated per year. Despite being one of the most preventable cancers, it is still a major public health concern due to inadequate skin protection. Chemical sunscreens, one of the most effective preventatives, can adsorb and scatter ultraviolet (UV) photons before damage occurs to skin. The choice of UV organic filter molecules and subsequent testing of formulations is costly and raises ethical concerns when testing on animals. Molecular modeling tools, using first principles calculations, can be used to reduce in-vitro testing and minimize in-vivo tests when developing new formulations. In this talk prediction of adsorption spectra and photostability of sunscreen actives will be presented, along with methods to simulate full sunscreen production formulations.
